The Itzel Library [TIL]: ¿Cuando nació Jessica McQuinn como escritora? / When born Jessica McQuinn as a writer?

Jessica McQuinn [JM]: Siempre he sido escritora, pero la vida y los niños me alejaron por un tiempo. Hace unos tres años, mis hijos comenzaron la escuela, y yo no sabía qué hacer conmigo misma. Fue entonces cuando empecé a escribir Passion Fish con mi amiga Alison Oburia y volví al oficio.

--I’ve always been a writer, but life and children derailed that for a while. About three years ago, my kids started school, and I didn’t know what to do with myself. That’s when I started writing Passion Fish with my friend Alison Oburia and found my writing again.

TIL: ¿Cuándo surge Indivisible? / When did Indivisible born? 

JM: Empecé a escribir Indivisible en el verano de 2008 después de que una amiga cercana me habló de su esposo que es un militar y de repente le enviaron a una misión por 6 meses. Inmediatamente mi mente comenzó a trabajar en una gran cantidad de ideas "y si...". Y, por supuesto, me gusta mucho un hombre fuerte y protector en uniforme.

--I started writing Indivisible in the summer of 2008 after a good friend of mine told me about her military husband being deployed for six months all of a sudden. Immediately my mind started working on a lot of “what if” ideas. And of course, I really like a big strong protective man in uniform. 

TIL: ¿Puedes contarnos sobre la novela? ¿A qué público va dirigida? / Can you tell us more about the novel? What audience is aimed?

JM: Indivisible no es un  romance "típico",  se inicia con el héroe y la heroína ya juntos y casados. Se trata de un romance de una pareja lidiando con la vida real, el mundo real y dándose fuerzas uno al otro en esa lucha.


Gideon y Charlie Cooper se casaron después de un fin de semana juntos y vivieron maravillosamente hasta que el Navy SEAL, Gideon, le dice que tiene una misión y se va por 6 meses. Mientras que Gideon está fuera, Charlie tiene que aprender a ser independiente por primera vez en su vida. Y hace un gran trabajo hasta que un trágico suceso lo cambia todo y tiene que aprender a confiar en su familia.

--Indivisible isn’t a “typical” romance in that it starts out with the hero and heroine already together and married. This is a romance about a couple struggling with dealing with real life and the real world and finding strength in each other. 

Gideon and Charlie Cooper married after a weekend together and lived the perfect life together until Navy SEAL, Gideon finds out her has to deploy for six months. While Gideon is gone Charlie must learn to be independent for the first time in her life. And she’s doing a great job until a tragic event changes everything and she has to learn to trust her family. 

TIL: ¿Puedes decirnos 3 razones por las cuales la gente debe leer tus novelas? / Can you tell us 3 reasons why people should read your novels?

JM: Esta es una pregunta difícil de responder... 


Una de las cosas que me han dicho es que soy capaz de poner un montón de emoción en mis personajes, es algo que me encanta escuchar. Creo que conectar con un personaje a un nivel emocional y preocuparse de lo que sucede con ellos es muy importante. 


No escribo el típico romance, donde los dos personajes principales se cortejar mutuamente antes de que finalmente terminen juntos. Aunque me gusta la "persecución" en la mayoría de los romances, mis historias son en general acerca de la relación una vez que la persecución ha terminado. Así que es algo un poco diferente. 


Y, si te gusta un chico buenote y protector como héroe... entonces mis héroes sin duda serán tu tipo de hombre. Amo ver un hombre fuerte que cuida de una mujer, pero aún así le permite ser fuerte también.

--This is a hard question to answer… 


One thing I’ve been told is that I am able to put a lot of emotion into my characters, which I love to hear. I think that connecting to a character on an emotional level and caring about what happens to them is so important. 


I don’t write a typical romance where the two main characters dance around each other before they finally end up together. While I like the “chase” in most romances, my stories are generally about the relationship once the chase is over. So it’s something a little different. 


And, if you like a big, protective hunk of a man as a hero…then my heroes will definitely be your kind of man. I love a strong man who can take care of a woman, but still allows her to be strong too.

TIL: Si pudiera ser uno de sus personajes por un día, ¿quién sería y por qué? / If you could be any one of your characters for a day, who would you be and why?

JM: Ésta es muy difícil porque amo a todos mis personajes. Me encanta la atrevida Skylar, su personalidad fuerte en Passion Fish (y ella llega a tener Gage!). En Indivisible, envidio a Charlie que tiene a Gideon que la ama total y profundamente, Evelyn es la madre que quiero ser y Paige es la amiga que quiero ser. Ah, y Brea en mi nueva serie SWAT, es increíblemente fuerte e inteligente.

No creo que yo puedo elegir sólo uno? Eso es como tratar de ver cuál de mis hijos me gusta más!
--This one is hard too because I love all of my characters. I love Skylar’s sassy, strong personality in Passion Fish (and she gets to have Gage!). In Indivisible, I envy Charlie’s having Gideon to love her so totally and deeply, Evelyn is the mother that I want to be and Paige is the friend I want to be. Oh, and Brea in my new SWAT series is amazingly strong and smart. 


I don’t think that I can pick just one? That’s like trying to pick which of my kids I like better!

TIL: ¿Hay algún proyecto en curso del que nos pueda hablar un poco? / Is there an ongoing project of which you talk a little?

JM: En realidad, mi editorial, Omnific Publishing, acaba de lanzar un par de antologías para el verano. Hay trece autores de Omnific, que han contribuido a estos dos libros. Summer Breeze está llena de romances dulces, mientras que Heat Wave es un poco erótico. Mi historia, Big Guns, está en Heat Wave (por supuesto) y es un vistazo a mi historia SWAT con chicos sexys y protectores pasando una noche de verano divirtida.


Todas las ganancias de la venta de cada antología van a una gran causa, Save the Tatas Foundation, para la investigación del cáncer de mama. Se trata de una causa tan importante y estoy muy feliz de haber donado mi tiempo para ésto.
