The Itzel Library: Por favor, cuéntenos un poco sobre usted, ¿quién es Pamela Clare? / Please, tell us a little bit about you, who’s Pamela Clare?

Pamela Clare: Soy madre soltera de dos niños que han crecido hasta convertirse en maravillosos jóvenes, soy jardinera y periodista. Tengo un montón de intereses del quilting para el cultivo de rosas en granjas urbanas —usando mi patio trasero para cultivar mis propios alimentos. Me encanta estar al aire libre y crecí haciendo hiking en las Montañas Rocosas, que están justo afuera de mi casa. En Colorado, parte de nuestra clase de educación física es aprender a esquiar, así que realmente paso mucho tiempo en las montañas. Me encanta observar la vida silvestre, incluyendo las aves. --I’m a single mother of two boys who’ve grown into wonderful young men, a gardener and a journalist. I have a lot of interests from quilting to growing roses to urban farming — using the yard around my house to grow my own food. I love the outdoors and grew up hiking in the Rocky Mountains, which are right outside my house. In Colorado, part of our physical education class is learning to ski, so I really spent a lot of time in the mountains. I love watching wildlife, including birds. In Colorado, we are very blessed to have all of these things in abundance.

TIL: ¿Qué autor que puede leer mil veces y todavía querer seguir leyéndolo? / Who’s that author that you can read a thousand times & still want to read him/her again?

PC: J. R. Tolkien. Nunca me canso de vivir en el mundo que él creó. La nobleza de sus historias es atemporal, llamándonos a todos a encontrar a nuestro héroe interior y a hacer cosas importantes con nuestra vida. Tengo sus libros, en papel y en audiolibro, y he visto las películas que hizo Peter Jackson de sus historias tantas veces que es vergonzoso. 

--J.R.R. Tolkien. I will never get too much of living in the world he created. The nobility of his stories is timeless, calling to all of us to find our inner hero and do things with our life that matter. I own his books both in print and on audiobook, and I’ve watched Peter Jackson’s film version of the stories so many times that it’s embarrassing. 

TIL: ¿Podría decirme por favor, qué libro cambió su vida, y por qué? / Could you tell me please, which book changed your life, and why?

PC: Si ampliamos el panorama a toda mi vida, Misty of Chincoteague probablemente jugó el papel más importante. Fue después de leer el libro a la edad de 9 o 10 que me di cuenta de lo poderosa que puede ser la ficción para conmover a los corazones humanos. Supe entonces que quería ser novelista. Quería escribir historias que llegaran a la gente y se quedara con ellos. Mi vida entera ha sido moldeada por ese deseo. 

--In terms of the bigger picture of my life, Misty of Chincoteague probably played the biggest role. It was after I read the book at the age of 9 or 10 that I realized how powerful fiction could be in touching human hearts. I knew right then that I wanted to be a novelist. I wanted to write stories that touch people and stay with them. My entire life has been shaped by that desire.

TIL: En su opinión, ¿qué es lo mejor y lo peor de ser un escritor? / In your opinion, what’s the best and the worst thing about being a writer? 

PC: Aislamiento. Otros artistas interactúan con sus audiencias de forma más directa que los autores. Actores de teatro, músicos y artistas tienen una conexión directa con su público. Hay una sinergia entre su actuación y las personas a las que están llegando. Los actores de películas interactúan unos con otros y con su equipo de filmación. Los pintores cuelgan su obra en galerías donde pueden compartir con el espectador la experiencia de ver su trabajo. Los escritores trabajan en forma aislada. Creo que eso es difícil para nosotros, a pesar de que muchos autores tienen una profunda necesidad de la soledad. Hay una desconexión entre nuestra escritura y la recepción de los lectores de nuestras palabras, pasa un año, en general, entre el momento en que termino un libro y está en manos de los lectores. El Internet ha roto algunos de estos obstáculos, por lo que los escritores están, probablemente, más en contacto con sus lectores que nunca antes. El otro elemento es ser tan sedentaria. Necesito uno de esos Treadmill desk!

--Isolation. Other artists interact with their audiences more directly than authors. Theater actors, musicians and others performers have a direct connection with their audience. There’s a synergy between their performance and the people who are taking it in. Film actors have collaboration with one another and the film crew. Artists paint and hang their work in galleries where they can then share with the viewer the experience of seeing their work. Writers work in isolation. I think that’s hard for us, despite the fact that many authors have a profound need for solitude. There’s a disconnect between our writing and our readers reception of our words; a year goes by, generally speaking, between the time when I finish a book and it’s in readers hands. The Internet has broken down some of those obstacles, so writers are probably more in touch with their readers than ever before.

The other element is being so sedentary. I need one of those treadmill desks!

TIL: ¡Me encantan las novelas de la serie I-Team! ¿Cómo es que nace la serie? / I love the I-team novels, how was this series born?

PC: Me alegro de que hayas disfrutado de la serie. Empecé a escribir novela histórica, porque eso era lo que había leído. Me encanta la historia. De hecho, mi carrera está en la arqueología clásica. Me encanta la investigación. Sin embargo, mi vida como periodista ha incluido una gran cantidad de experiencias que están fuera de la norma. He tenido armas apuntándome dos veces, tuve dos hombres entrando en mi apartamento cuando estaba sola en casa con mi hijo entonces de 9 meses, pasé 24 horas en la cárcel como un preso para ver cómo era y he recibido muchas amenazas. Una noche le contaba a mi agente sobre mi última amenaza -no me sacan mucho de quicio estos incidentes- y mi agente me dijo: "¿Por qué no escribes suspense romántico, por lo que has vivido?" Y le contesté, "Sí, a excepción de la parte romántica". 

Entonces la idea era intentar escribir una historia de suspense romántico y ver cómo iba. Ni siquiera había leído suspense romántico antes de escribir EXTREME EXPOSURE (Al Límite), fue una experiencia extraña hacer algo que sentía que realmente no sabía cómo hacer. Pero en general ha ido increíblemente bien, y ésta serie definitivamente tiene un seguimiento muy fuerte. 

--I’m so glad you’ve enjoyed the series. I started writing historical romance, because that was what I read. I love history. In fact, my degree is in classical archaeology. I love the research. However, my life as a journalist has included a wealth of experiences that are outside of the norm. I’ve had guns held on me twice, had two men break into my apartment when I was home alone with my then-9-month-old son, spent 24 hours in jail as an inmate to see what it was like and gotten lots of threats. I was telling my agent one evening about the latest threat — I don’t get too riled up by these incidents — and my agent said, “Why don’t you write romantic suspense, because you live it?” And I answered, “Yes, except for the ‘romantic’ part.” 

So the idea was that I would try to write a romantic suspense story and see how it went. I hadn’t even read romantic suspense before I wrote EXTREME EXPOSURE (Al Limite), so it was a strange experience of doing something I felt I really didn’t know how to do. But overall it has gone amazingly well, and this series definitely has a very strong following.

TIL: ¿Habrán más libros de la Serie I-Team en el futuro? / There will be more books for the I-Team Series in the future?

PC: Sí, absolutamente. Quiero terminar la serie antes de que pierda su atractivo y antes de que me queme con ella. Pero en este momento estoy viendo por lo menos dos libros más, quizás tres, así como algunas novelas relacionadas con los personajes del I-Team. 

--Yes, absolutely. I want to end the series before it loses its appeal and before I get burnt out on it. But at this point I’m seeing at least two more books, maybe three, as well as some novellas related to the I-Team characters.

TIL: La portada de Breaking Point es hermosa, ¿tuvo algo que ver con su creación? / The cover of Breaking Point is beautiful, you have had to do with creating it?

PC: ¡Gracias! Me encanta. 

Es una historia un poco divertida. Mi aporte fue en la publicación de fotos del modelo, Jed Hill, en mi blog. Le dije a mis lectores que era mi modelo físico de Zach McBride, el héroe. Mi editor leyó esos posts, y fue a conseguir a Jed para la portada para sorprenderme. Fue una sorpresa fantástica. Estaba muy emocionada. Y la portada resultó ser maravillosa. 

--Thank you! I just love it.
It’s kind of a funny story. My contribution was in posting photos of the model, Jed Hill, on my blog. I told my readers that he was my physical model for Zach McBride, the hero. My editor read those posts and went out and got Jed for the cover shoot to surprise me. It was a fantastic surprise. I was thrilled. And the cover turned out to be wonderful.

TIL: Julian Darcangelo era mi personaje favorito en esta serie, ahora creo que Zack está en mi corazón también. ¿Usted tiene un afecto especial por alguno de los héroes de la serie I-Team? / Julian Darcangelo was my favorite character on this series, now I think Zack is in my heart too. You have a special affection for any of the heroes of the I-Team series?

PC: ¡Oh, eso es tan difícil! Acabo de hacer una encuesta en mi blog, y Marc Hunter quedó en el Nº 1 con los lectores, seguido de Julian Darcangelo, entonces Zach McBride, a continuación, Gabe Rossiter, y luego Reece Sheridan. Me sorprendió que Marc haya ganado (y por muchos votos), porque pensé que Julian era el favorito. Realmente me encantan todos. Se sienten como personas reales para mí. --Oh, that’s so hard! I just did a poll on my blog, and Marc Hunter came in No. 1 with readers, followed by Julian Darcangelo, then Zach McBride, then Gabe Rossiter, then Reece Sheridan. I was surprised Marc won (and by a lot of votes), because I thought Julian was the favorite. I really do love them all. They feel like real people to me. There’s not a single I-Team hero I wouldn’t love to have as a boyfriend.

TIL: Se dice que cada autor da un poco de sí mismo en cada página. ¿Se siente identificado con algún personaje, de todos sus libros? / It is said that every author gives a little bit of herself in every page. Do you feel identified with any character, of all your books?

PC: Kara McMillan de EXTREME EXPOSURE es probablemente la heroína que es más como yo. Ella es una madre soltera y un periodista galardonada, que lleva un montón de riesgo. Sin embargo, me siento particularmente cercana a Kat, la heroína Navajo de NAKED EDGE, en parte porque tengo muchos amigos Navajo y he pasado tiempo en la reserva. Pero amo a todas las heroínas y desearía que fueran reales. Holly es muy especial para mí, y estoy ansiosa por llegar a su historia.

--Kara McMillan from EXTREME EXPOSURE is probably the heroine who’s most like me. She’s a single mom and an award-winning reporter who takes a lot of chances. However, I feel especially close to Kat, the Navajo heroine from NAKED EDGE, in part because I have so many Navajo friends and have spent time on the reservation. But I love all the heroines and wish they were real. Holly is really special to me, and I can’t wait to get to her story.

TIL: Si pudiera ser uno de sus personajes por un día, ¿quién sería y por qué? / If you could be any one of your characters for a day, who would you be and why?

PC: ¡Oh, interesante pregunta! Sería Tessa o Sophie, para que pudiera experimentar lo que es tener a un gran protector macho alfa en mi vida. Sería especialmente bueno si ese día pudiera incluir una noche también. 

-Oh, interesting question! I’d be either Tessa or Sophie so that I could experience what it’s like to have a big, protective alpha male in my life. It would be especially cool if that day could include a night, as well.

TIL: ¿Puede decirnos acerca de sus novelas históricas, para aquellos que no han tenido la oportunidad de leerlas? / Can you tell us about your historical novels, for those who have not had the opportunity to read them?

PC: Tengo dos series históricas, la serie de la familia Kenleigh / Blakewell que se inicia en 1730 en la Virginia colonial y están involucrádos miembros de estas dos familias. Se compone de tres libros: SWEET RELEASE, CARNAL GIFT, y  RIDE THE FIRE. RIDE THE FIRE es una de mis novelas favoritas personales. Me gustaría un día volver a esta serie y terminar con al menos dos libros más. 

  

La segunda es mi serie MacKinnon’s Ranger, que se desarrolla durante la guerra francesa y india colonial en Nueva York. Fueron tiempos muy peligrosos, y el suspenso y peligro hace que las historias sean tan divertidas de escribir. He hecho un montón de investigación para esta serie, incluida la realización de visitas a los lugares reales de las historias, me reuní con el arqueólogo que excavó el sitio principal en los libros y leyendo los diarios de personas que vivieron entonces. ¡Me encanta esa época! Los héroes son tres hermanos escoceses, cuya familia fue exiliada de las Highlands de Escocia, cuando eran niños. --I’ve got two historical series, the Kenleigh/Blakewell family series that starts in 1730 in Colonial Virginia and involves members of these two families. It consists of three books: SWEET RELEASE, CARNAL GIFT, and RIDE THE FIRE. RIDE THE FIRE is one of my personal favorite novels. I would like one day to go back to this series and finish it with at least two more books.

The second series is my MacKinnon’s Ranger series, which is set during the French & Indian War in Colonial New York. It was a very gritty, dangerous time, and that suspense and danger makes the stories so fun to write. I’ve done a lot of research for this series, including making visits to the real places in the stories, meeting with the archaeologist who excavated the main site in the books and reading diaries of people who lived then. I love this time period! The heroes are three Scottish brothers whose family was exiled from the highlands of Scotland when they were boys. They’ve grown up on the frontier with Indians and are kind of a hybrid between the Highland Scottish warrior and Indian warriors. Forced to fight for the British, they have all kinds of adventures, each brother finding the love of his life amid the struggles of war. There will be at least one, probably two, addition stories besides the three brothers, one featuring Lord William Wentworth, who has been an anti-hero for most of this series, and Joseph, a Mahican man who is blood brother to the MacKinnon brothers.

TIL: ¿Puede darnos algún detalle sobre cualquier proyecto en curso? / Can you give any details on any new writing project you have coming up?

PC: En este momento, estoy trabajando en DEFIANT, el tercer libro de la serie MacKinnon’s Rangers, que cuenta la historia del hermano menor, Connor MacKinnon. Estoy a mitad de camino con él, es decir, que estoy con retraso.

--Right now, I’m working on DEFIANT, the third book in the MacKinnon’s Rangers series, telling the story of the youngest brother, Connor MacKinnon. I’m about halfway done with it, which is to say, I’m behind.
